Connecting Spontaneous Expressions is a group show featuring artists from Art Brut Project Cuba, LAND Studio and Gallery, and the Foundation INUTI of Stockholm, Sweden. These three studios support and promote a range of self-taught artists providing them with an environment that encourages participation and social integration through their art. In a celebration of work made in these progressive art studios, curators Samuel Riera and Derbis Compos invite us to reflect on Art Brut and Outsider Art in a global context.
Featured artists include Asa Liljeholm, Buster Hollingsworth, Camilla Holmquist, Carl Bernalt, Cecilia Karlsson, Julia Göransson, Mattias Johansson, Roza Pedari, Stefan Nilsson, and Therese Persson from Foundation INUTI; Carlos Javier García Huergo, Lázaro Antonio Martínez Duran, and Ramón Morales Díazfrom Art Brut Project Cuba; and Nicole Appel from LAND.
Connecting Spontaneous Expressions marks the first time Appel's work will be shown in Latin America. Appel, who joined LAND in January of 2016, has a unique eye reflected in her visually descriptive illustrations. With themes ranging from fashion to travel and beyond, Appel’s meticulously detailed compositions merge seemingly disparate subjects to create one of a kind masterpieces. Each work is both a gift for and a portrait of an important figure in her life. On display in Connecting Spontaneous Expressions will be a portrait Appel made of a family friend from Cuba, a beautifully rendered collage of postcards, Cuban cigar boxes, and scenes of Havana.
LAND would like to thank Samuel Riera for organizing this exhibition.
